Mónica y Javier son una pareja, de 39 y 40 años respectivamente. Acuden un día a nuestra consulta contándonos que llevan 5 años buscando ser padres, se han hecho dos inseminaciones artificiales y tres ciclos de FIV previamente sin lograr el embarazo. Les solicitamos pruebas a ambos, y lo único que encontramos es que Mónica tiene una reserva ovárica baja, menor de la que le corresponde por edad.
Les explicamos las posibilidades que tenemos realizando un nuevo ciclo de FIV y ellos se vienen abajo, saben que han agotado todas las posibilidades. Y es entonces cuando les hablamos de la ovodonación, algo que hasta ahora ellos no se habían planteado. Al principio surgen dudas, tales como “no se va a parecer a mí”, “no voy a ser su madre biológica”, “como se lo digo cuando sea mayor”…
Cristina es una chica universitaria de 23 años que a través de una amiga se informó sobre la posibilidad de ser donante de óvulos. Ella había pensado ya sobre ello, ya que una de sus tías tuvo problemas de esterilidad por endometriosis y consiguió ser madre gracias a una donanción de ovocitos.
En nuestro centro a Cristina le realizamos toda una serie de pruebas, analítica, estudio de fertilidad, estudio genético y valoración por parte de nuestra psicóloga. Ella entiende que la ovodonación es un acto altruista y anónimo, por lo que no puede tener información de los datos de los pacientes a los que va a ayudar. Una vez comprobamos que Cristina es una donante sana, con fertilidad probada y estudio genético completo entra en nuestra base de datos, pendiente de recibir nuestra llamada en el momento en que encontremos una paciente compatible con sus datos y características físicas.
Un semana más tarde Mónica y Javier vuelven a la consulta. Ella tiene muchas dudas con la ovodonación y deciden realizar un nuevo ciclo de FIV. Intentamos hacer una estimulación con dosis altas para tratar de conseguir mejores resultados que los previos, pero llegamos al día 10 de estimulación y Mónica solo tiene un folículo en crecimiento, por lo que cancelamos el tratamiento. La pareja está muy desanimada y anímicamente desgastada de tanto resultado negativo, por lo que deciden tomarse un descanso y pensar sobre sus opciones.
Pero Mónica que no acaba de darse por vencida, vuelve una semana más tarde, para resolver todas sus dudas sobre la donación de ovocitos. Le explicamos que para ella es un tratamiento sencillo, sin estimulación ovárica ni punción, que la donante es anónima, con rasgos físicos similares a la pareja y que realizamos un despistaje de enfermedades genéticas para evitar incompatibilidades entre la donante y su pareja.
Un mes más tarde Mónica y Javier se han decidido, van a intentar un tratamiento de ovodonación. Llamamos entonces a Cristina, que está preparada y coordinamos sus ciclos menstruales.
A Cristina (donante) le explicamos cómo ha de inyectarse la medicación y le hacemos controles ecográficos rigurosos, mientras Mónica comienza a tomar un tratamiento oral con estrógenos y vamos controlando como el endometrio, que es la capa del útero donde implantan los embriones, va creciendo correctamente.
Llega el día de la punción para Cristina, que acude nerviosa pero segura de que va a salir todo bien. Ese mismo día Javier viene a nuestro centro para traer una muestra de semen con la que haremos la fecundación.
Las buenas noticias no se hacen esperar, al día siguiente llamamos a Mónica y Javier para contarles que tenemos cinco embriones fecundados. Ellos saben que los vamos a observar hasta pasados 5 días para comprobar que se dividen correctamente y que tengan mayores posibilidades de dar un embarazo.
A los cinco días tenemos 3 embriones que han llegado al estadío de blastocisto, y otros dos que se han dividido de forma errónea y se han detenido durante el proceso. Ese mismo día vienen Javier y Mónica con mucha ilusión, ya que vamos a realizar la transferencia embrionaria.
Tras hablarlo con ellos decidimos transferir un solo embrión ya que tiene muchas posibilidades de embarazo, y congelar los otros dos para un embarazo más adelante. Realizamos una transferencia sin complicaciones y guiada por ecografía, comprobando que el embrión queda colocado en su sitio.
Y ahora nuestra pareja vuelve a su casa a esperar…Son doce días que llaman la beta espera porque es el tiempo de incertidumbre hasta realizar la beta HCG en sangre que es la hormona del embarazo. Javier y Mónica hacen sus vidas de forma rutinaria hasta que llega el día y ella acude a realizarse la analítica. Poco antes de las cinco suena el teléfono con la llamada tan esperada, y nuestra enfermera les informa de que la beta es positiva.
La alegría no puede ser mayor, y crece cuando acuden a su primera ecografía en el centro donde escuchan por primera vez el latido del embrión.
Los meses de aquí en adelante pasan volando, y Mónica finalmente llega a la semana 40 de embarazo y da a luz a Carmen, una niña preciosa, sana y sobre todo muy querida.
